Community guidelines

UICC Connect is a global online community of cancer professionals, providing a space for meaningful dialogue, knowledge sharing, and collaboration hosted by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).

The community platform is aimed at individuals working professionally in cancer care, research, advocacy, policy or planning, with a focus on the public health dimensions of cancer control – i.e. prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and palliative care, viewed through the lens of equity and health systems.

UICC Connect is not a space for discussing individual cancer cases, nor a platform to seek specific medical advice or information on the disease or its treatment course.

Community members, or their organisations, should not in any way work with or be associated with the tobacco industry, its staff or organisations which receive funding from tobacco companies.

All new accounts created on UICC Connect are verified to ensure they fit within the ethos and purpose of the platform. Those affiliated with UICC member organisations have priority access and benefit from exclusive content (e.g. online courses, private rooms). All other verified users can access open rooms and contribute content on the platform. To foster an environment free from commercial bias, the ability to post content may however be restricted for those working for private or commercial entities outside of UICC partnerships.

In order to ensure the content posted on the platform truly adds value to the community, and that everyone feels able to express their opinions in a safe and respectful way, please consider the following community guidelines when posting:

  1. Be Respectful: Show respect for all members of our community, regardless of their race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, or any other personal attribute. Do not use language or engage in behaviour that is discriminatory, abusive, or offensive.
  2. Be Relevant: Contribute to the community in a meaningful way. The community hopes to be a safe space for exchanging opinions, sharing concerns and raising new ideas which will benefit other users. When posting content, try to provide a level of reflection that can be extrapolated as good practice, lesson learnt or "food for thought" to facilitate discussions and/or calls to action. Avoid posting content that is unrelated to the community's purpose or that is solely intended to promote a product or service. Excessive self-promotion, repeating existing content without offering any fresh perspective, as well as spam posting (posting too many posts at one time) are also to be avoided.
  3. Be Honest: Be truthful and accurate in your contributions to the community. Do not spread rumours, false information, or engage in deception. When advancing facts or making assertions, try to include relevant sources, or make clear they reflect your personal experience or understanding, rather than reporting hearsay. Always attribute quotes and paraphrased comments to their proper sources. If discussing someone else's work, please summarise it in your own words.
  4. Be Safe: Keep yourself and others safe by avoiding any content or behaviour that is likely to cause harm or create a risk of harm. Do not post sensitive information about yourself or others, and do not engage in activities that are illegal or dangerous. Respect people's privacy by not posting personal details or contact information about anyone other than yourself, unless they have agreed to it. If describing a sensitive work situation, please consider leaving out details that could lead to the identification of individuals.
  5. Be Mindful: Be aware of the impact your contributions may have on others, and avoid any behaviour that is likely to cause offense or harm. Consider the perspectives of others and be open to feedback and discussion.
  6. Be Collaborative: Work together with other members of the community to create a positive and productive environment. Share knowledge, ideas, and resources freely, and be open to learning from others. The community is also a place to ask and answer questions, request and offer help, as well as share doubts or uncertainties to get feedback from the community members.
  7. Be Lawful: Do not post material which may encourage criminal conduct, or which may give rise to civil liability, or is otherwise unlawful. Do not to post any links that can take users to unlawful material. Ensure that you have the right to reproduce any image, text, video or other content that you upload to our website. Posting copyrighted material without permission may be unlawful.

Violations of these community guidelines may result in temporary or permanent suspension from the community. We reserve the right to remove any content or member that violates these guidelines, at our discretion.

This platform is post-moderated, which means that all commentary and discussion will appear on the website as soon as you post it. All posts are regularly reviewed and checked. If you find something which you think breaches the terms of these Guidelines or the website’s Terms of Use, please report it to us so we can help find a solution and we can maintain high standards of participation.

Thank you for being a part of the UICC Connect community, and for helping us to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.
